The Washington State NewsGuild has been voluntarily recognized by management
McClatchy has recognized our union. The recognition comes following Wednesday’s decision from the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) supporting the formation of all four newsrooms, The News Tribune in Tacoma, The Olympian, The Bellingham Herald, and the Tri-City Herald, into one union.
The official recognition of our union is a huge step forward for journalism in our communities and for our readers that rely on our work to be informed about issues that directly impact their lives. The Washington State NewsGuild applauds management for taking this step and moving forward with us into a bright new future for local journalism. There is still much work to be done, but this is a good first step.
We look forward to meeting McClatchy at the bargaining table and engaging in good faith negotiations. We are concerned about the company’s conduct toward our colleagues at the One Herald Guild in Florida. We hope McClatchy will respect the collective power of our union and all represented news organizations.
Our union is committed to fighting for and preserving journalism in our communities. We hope that McClatchy will join us in these efforts and respect the collective power of our union. The journalists have spoken and McClatchy has listened. We remain hopeful that it will continue to do so.
